How to Prepare for Your Business Headshot

Before you start overthinking and stressing yourself out about getting the perfect business headshot, the first and most important thing to do is relax. A great photographer knows how to capture the best photo of you that will make you shine, pushing aside any fear you may have to help make you as comfortable as possible in front of the camera.

That said, there are some simple and effective steps you can take to make sure you look as sharp as possible when it’s time to take your photo.

Whether you use your new photo on your social profiles, in a press kit, or on your company website, you want it be a balance of professional and authentic. If you don’t usually wear jewelry or if you never wear a bow tie, this probably isn’t the best time to start.

Once you know when your business headshot is scheduled, take time before the big day to plan out what you are going to wear and how you want to look, especially if you’ll need to change and get ready there.

Below are some tips that have helped my clients over the years make sure they get a photo they’re proud to showcase.

    • Take time to carefully select your outfit. Make sure to add in extra time just in case you’ll need to go shopping for a new outfit.
    • Make sure that your clothes are properly ironed and wrinkle free. If you’re changing on location, bring your outfit in a garment bag.
    • Consider tailored outfits or outfits that fit you the best.
    • Get plenty of sleep the night before your photo shoot.
    • Arrive at the photo shoot with a clean moisturized face if you’re having your make-up done at the studio. If you’re doing your own make-up, opt for a natural look and bring your make-up kit with you.
    • Double check how you look at least ten minutes before you’re scheduled photo shoot time.

When in doubt, it’s always better to bring a couple outfit, accessory, or jewelry options with you to let the photographer help pick out what would look best for the photo. The photographer is there to help. Lean on them to make sure you feel as confident and excited as possible about your photo.

Now all that’s left is to smile!
